Artist Notes

I began with a black spray undercoat.

The primary gradient was applied using an airbrush, working from bottom to top. Credit to Warrenborn for the following color ratios:

  • Foot to ankle- Vallejo Black
  • Ankle to Knee- 2:1 Vallejo Black and Vallejo Cold Grey
  • Knee to Hip- 1:1 Vallejo Black and Vallejo Cold Grey
  • Lower Torso- 3:1 Vallejo Cold Grey and Vallejo Black
  • Upper Torso- Vallejo Cold Grey

A light wash of Citadel Nuln Oil was then applied to the whole miniature. Next I applied a light drybrush from top to bottom, with each gradient layer being drybrushed with the lighter color ratio above it. For example, the feet were drybrushed with a 2:1 Vallejo Black and Vallejo Cold Grey mix. Finally, I added highlights with Citadel Administratum Grey to the uppermost surfaces.

The red trim was painted with Citadel Evil Suns Scarlet, followed by a layer of Citadel Blood Angels Red. A final highlight of Evil Suns Scarlet was reapplied.

The ankle checkers are Vallejo Black and Vallejo White.

Metallic details were painted with Citadel Leadbelcher or Citadel Balthasar Gold followed by a Citadel Nuln Oil wash.

Canopy panels and red lenses were painted with a Citadel Mephiston Red basecoat followed by a layer of Citadel Evil Suns Scarlet, with a final highlight of Vallejo White or Citadel Yriel Yellow.

The Light PPCs were painted Citadel Macragge Blue, followed by Citadel Teclis Blue and Vallejo Sky Blue. Lastly a highlight of Vallejo White was applied.

After decals were applied, I added layers of weathering by sponge application of Citadel Dryad Bark and Citadel Leadbelcher. Finally, the miniature was sealed with matte varnish, basing was added, and lenses received a final layer of Citadel ‘Ardcoat.
