Phoenix Hawk IIC – Miller’s Hussars

Scheme Inspiration

This is the custom Phoenix Hawk IIC of Star Commander Kaedyn of the mercenary command Miller’s Hussars. Kaedyn’s fire team paints its machines in dark gray transitioning to light gray, with other art reflecting the individual warrior’s tastes. The bear pelt was chosen because Kaedyn is a former Ghost Bear.

Artist Notes

This Phoenix Hawk IIC is modified to have five medium pulse lasers, eight improved jump jets, and a targeting computer. The UAC/10s were removed from the torsos and replaced them with the arm pods from a Timber Wolf. A unique pose was chosen. The Atlas from IWM (20-942RE) was perfect because the head is a separate piece. Brass wire was used to simulate the myomer and scrap and as a “handle” for the Atlas head.

The paint is all Army Painter Fanatic, with the requisite Rustoleum black primer. Light gray was dry brushed and transitioned to dark gray. Dark Tone wash was applied and the same gray dry brush was used to smooth out the stains. The bear pelt came out nicely and while it might not be a perfect bear it’s at least recognizable as an animal. It was done with freehand and used a mix of white, gray, and black. The process involved sketching out the rough shape on paper and applying to the cockpit. Teeth were outlined in black to give contrast and a very light and diluted flesh tone was used for the lips. The eyes are Imperial Navy with Daemonic Yellow pupils. The paws on the shoulders used the same technique as the head, with Imperial Navy as the base for the claws. White was the highlight and black was used to outline the claws and paws. The checker pattern on the right knee is also freehand. A pattern was drawn on the knee using pencil and then filled in. The colors chosen were white and Crystal Blue. Finally, the cockpit canopy used Dragon Red as the first layer, then Pure Red, then Lava Orange, and finally Daemonic Yellow. Some white was used as the final jeweling. Gloss varnish gives the canopy its shine.
