The Black Marauder

It looked pristine—that is, what he could see of it did. Its paint was a flat black that melted into the shadows. No matter what angle he viewed it from, Kevin couldn’t quite see it clearly, as if the machine conspired to keep some part of itself hidden. The more he did see, the more his unease gnawed at him. The ’Mech was wrong. Its angles were too smooth, its proportions not quite right. It was too sleek, yet its bulk terribly imposing.

Artist Notes

In addition to the Black Marauder stories, I decided to have my take on the monster also play off the idea of it being the heavy crab and Lovecraft’s use of aquatic-themed monsters. I used green stuff to alter the shape of the Marauder miniature. I added talons, spikes at the elbows and knees, encased the arm weapon pods in claws, added a mouth with catfish-inspired barbels, and a fin on the back.

For the actual paint job, I used a base of Abaddon Black. I painted recesses that I wanted to have glowing with Genestealer Purple and then used a darker purple, Naggaroth Night, as highlighting with a few select highlights in Xereus Purple. Rather than a steel color for metal pieces, I used Warplock Bronze. The eye was painted with Wazdakka Red and Flash Gitz Yellow. To give the sense of it radiating darkness, I added Nuln Oil around its feet on the basing and then painted the basing closest to the feet with Black Templar.
