Artist Notes
Starting with a black primer, I layered on three separate base coats onto the ‘Mech. The top third was hit with a dark blue, Vallejo Model Color Dark Prussian Blue. The middle third got a coat of a saturated deep blue, in this case the Army Painter D&D Kraken Blue. The bottom third was basecoated with a desaturated grey-blue, Army Painter Warpaints Wolf Grey.
I then washed the entire model with a blue wash, using Army Paint Blue Tone. After drying, I proceeded to drybrush complimentary colors from the feet to the head, building into the 1st Long Road Legion/2nd Alliance Air Wing scheme.
This unit wants to look like stormy skies, so at the feet, I over-brushed Vallejo Mecha Color Sky Blue, but any bright, sky blue works. In the middle, I desaturated it a bit with Vallejo Model Color Azure. On the top I drybrushed on a dark gray with bluey tones with some Vallejo Model Color Neutral Grey. Each time I would drybrush slightly outside of the “appropriate” sections to facilitate the blended look. I then resaturated parts of the models by doing some extra drybrush blending with Vallejo Model Color Royal Blue.
The canopy of the ‘Mech is a yellow ochre and to achieve this, I basecoated it with Vallejo Model Color Black, then plotted my jewelling with ProAcryl Bright Yellow Ochre as it has great coverage. I accentuated points of this jewel effect with Two Thin Coats Skulker Yellow. I then made a grey-brown wash with Army Painter Warpaint Hardened Carapace (about 5 parts water to 1 part paint) and glazed the canopy windows to give a good transition in the dark parts. I reinforced the darkest parts of these windows, where the light hits most directly, with more black, then highlighted the yellow parts with Army Painter D&D Angelic Yellow.
At this point, I made sure to edge highlight any areas that needed to stick out most with some more of the Bright Yellow Ochre, then added gem spots with some ProAcryl Bold Titanium White.
