Crusader – 1st Ghost Regiment

by

Scheme Reference

The standard paint scheme for the Ghost regiments begins with a base coat of gray so light that it appears almost white. Accenting is usually white or darker gray. The First Ghost accents it machines in dark green striping. In keeping with the yakuza tradition of tattooing the body as a record of personal honor, each MechWarrior may decorate his BattleMech with personal designs that describe his warrior history. All BattleMechs are painted with dark green dragon-like scales that run from the torso up over the right shoulder, around the back and then down the left leg in a continuous chain. This design symbolizes the First Ghost’s devotion to the Dragon. The warrior’s record of BattleMech kills appears as gold scales painted along the edge of the green.

Artist Notes

This is a Crusader painted in First Ghost Regiment colors. The mini was primed black with Rustoleum primer. Otherwise, all paints are Army Painter Fanatic. The base layer was a mix of Ash Grey and white dry brushed onto the mini. Once the appropriate coverage was achieved, a wash of Dark Tone diluted with Wash Medium was applied. Another layer of the Ash Grey-white mixture was applied to even out the wash. Spot cleanup using a brush was done to remove coffee stains. The weapon barrels and joints were painted with Cobalt Metal and washed with Dark Tone. The cockpit canopies were Dragon Red, Lava Orange, and then Daemonic Yellow. The dragon scales were achieved with a base layer of Guardian Green. Each scale was then added with a dab of Leafy Green, followed by a mix of Leafy Green and Daemonic Yellow. This King Crab has a freehand painted dragon inspired by the ukiyo-e style. The paints used were Dragon Red, Pure Red, Lava Orange, Daemonic Yellow, and white. The dragon began with a rough pencil outline, followed by Dragon Red as the base layer. More details were added until the desired effect was achieved.
